Edgar Allan Poe's "A Descent into the Maelström" tells a dark story of a shipwreck and a whirlpool. While the original cover presents a more literal depiction of the tale, eerie pieces such as poe's can benefit from a more abstracted visual, which heightens curiosity for the reader and adds further meaning to the overall experience of reading the story.

The dark background is also intentionally meant to give a greater sense of vastness and depth. The unique gritty texture was collected from digitized texture rubbings.
